When are the fall banquets taking place?
This year Union Gospel Mission’s Fundraising Banquet is changing.  We are combining the fall banquets with Maurice McElrea’s retirement celebration.  The evening honours the legacy of long-time UGM President, Maurice McElrea. Maurice retires at the end of 2008, but his tremendous contribution throughout his 29 years of service lives on in the continued work of Union Gospel Mission and in the countless changed lives of those who were once hungry, hurting and homeless.  So, for this year, the night of celebration is Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre at 999 Canada Place, Exhibition Hall A.

Why is it during the week?
A weeknight was chosen for a couple of reasons.  First of all, in order to combine the banquets with a retirement celebration, we needed to be able to accommodate more than 1,000 people.  Facilities able to accommodate more than 1,000 are booked for corporate and Christmas functions on weekend evenings.  Also, as this will be a non-alcoholic beverage evening, it is best for the venue that the event is not on a weekend.

How much is the ticket?
This is a fundraiser and a recognition night.  A table of 10 is $1,500 although you will receive an income tax receipt of $900.  Or, a single ticket is $150 and you will receive an income tax receipt for $90.  Registered Canadian Charity #13190 2348 RR0001

What is the money going towards?
As a tribute to the immeasurable energy, efforts, passion and dedication committed by Maurice McElrea and his wife Lois, Union Gospel Mission is establishing the Maurice & Lois McElrea Scholarship Fund.  This will provide financial assistance for a deserving recipient during the course of continuing education. The scholarship fund will be the primary beneficiary of monies raised through the banquet.

What will the evening look like?
The evening is still taking shape, but there will be Celtic entertainment, music, video clips, live testimonies from individuals whose lives have changed and a couple of presentations to Maurice.  Maurice will also have an opportunity to thank everyone for their support throughout the years and for attending the function.  We will end at 10:00 p.m. respecting people travelling, working etc.  Please join us and help celebrate.
